The Board of Trustees is responsible for the day-to-day operation of township government activities, the township budget and other duties required by county, state and federal law. Board members are elected for four-year terms.
Michigan uses four types of local government – counties, cities, villages and townships. The State of Michigan contains 1,242 townships. Township government is conducted by the township board — a supervisor, clerk, treasurer, and two trustees. Board members are township residents who volunteer their time.
The township board may hire people to perform assigned functions, such as a manager, assessor, police chief, fire chief, public works superintendent, and other personnel to properly and efficiently operate the township.
Procedures for the township’s financial administration, such as budgets, accounting, investments and deposits, are closely regulated by the state. Township meetings must comply with Michigan’s Open Meetings Act (MCL 15.261-15.275), and township records must be stored and made available in conformance with specifi c laws, such as the Freedom of Information Act (MCL 15.231-15.246).
